The film “Shirts and Skins: The Sociology of Basketball” is about a side of basketball that often receives less exposure. It is not about the pros, it is about pickup basketball, a game for everyone. The people in the film talk about how when they play basketball it is an escape, they get in the zone and only think about the game. The game is both individual and communal, and while driven by the desire to win, it is also a game of respect and rules. Pickup basketball brings all sorts of people together to play, so how do they do so? Some of the older players talk about how the game has become a community, they have been playing for so long that they all have collective understandings of what the game is and how the rules work.
